ANo, you would put it into your EX area.

Advanced followers may exist in the evolve deck area, field, EX area, and resolution zone. If they are moved elsewhere, they are put back onto the top of the evolve deck faceup immediately afterward.

QIf my EX area is full, does the follower I select still get put into the EX area?

ANo, it remains on your field.
